As cryptocurrency becomes more and more popular, we’re going to start to see a lot more countries making a move into the industry. Two weeks ago, CanADA was making headlines. The country announced that KFC will now be accepting Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) as a payment mETHod. Today, Australia is catching the attention of the cryptocurrency industry.

According to a press release, the terminal shopping areas in Australia’s Brisbane Airport will now be accepting cryptocurrency as a mETHod of payment. This is pretty significant news considering the Brisbane Airport is the third busiest Australian airport. Brisbane is also the capital of Queensland, a city that gets a lot of tourists throughout the year.

Not only that, but this move marks the first airport worldwide to start using cryptocurrency as a payment mETHod. In the press release, Roel Hellemons, general manager of strategic planning at Brisbane Airport, stated that this move “makes sense,” and I couldn’t agree more.

Why? Because there are a number of people who travel internationally that are involved in or are thinking about investing in cryptocurrencies. Hellemons added that this move marks the “beginning for us as we hope to expand the digital currency option across the business.”

So, what do we know about the payment system? Well, we know that it will be provided by TravelbyBit. This is a well-known cryptocurrency travel firm. TravelbyBit has come forward and said that the payment system that will be put into use at the Brisbane Airport presents a “genuine use case for cryptocurrencies” in the tourism field.

As for the field of tourism, this is not the first time someone has thought about using cryptocurrency to excel the field. Back in November of last year, the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Tourism stated that blockchain technology is going to play a defining role in the transformation of the country’s tourism sector.
