On May 11, the anonymous philanthropist- “Pine”, curator of the Pineapple Fund, published a touching message in Reddit announcing their withdrawal from the crypto-sphere.

Five months ago, a Reddit user by the name of Pineapple Fund, posted an announcement on Reddit asking for recommendations to donate upwards of $86 million worth of BTC too. Many were skeptical and confused. However, when the first proofs of the donations became public, the community acquired a sense of enthusiasm and respect towards the project and its rarity in the world of cryptos.

“Hello!

I remember staring at Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) a few years ago. When Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) broke single digits for the first time, I thought that was a triumphant moment for Bitcoin (available on Coinbase). I watched and admired the price jump to $15… $20… $30… wow!

Today, I see $17,539 per BTC. I still don’t believe reality sometimes. Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) has changed my life, and I have far more money than I can ever spend. My aims, goals, and motivations in life have nothing to do with having XX million or being the mega rich. So I’m doing somETHing else: donating the majority of my Bitcoin (available on Coinbase)s to charitable causes. I’m calling it 🍍 The Pineapple Fund.

Yes, donating ~$86 million worth of Bitcoin (available on Coinbase)s to charities :)”

With this message, Pine introduced himself to the world. His outlook on life was an inspiration to many, proving that cryptocurrency can be much more than just a means to become rich and acquire lamborghini’s.

The number of beneficiaries has since risen to 60. Donations in some cases were up to $5,000,000 in BTC for initiatives ranging from OpenBSD to the Open Medicine Foundation.

Pine was not prejudiced in accepting suggestions. In an interview for Quartz, Pine mentions that he supported those he felt would have a positive impact on society according to his system of values:

“Well, it’s not that I think they are the most important or have the highest impact because I think everyone has a different set of values. They align with my values, and I think any contribution to those causes will bring some good to this world we all share.”

Donations also somewhat changed the conceptions of these organizations. Today, many of them view cryptos with more optimism, accepting donations in Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) as a new way to raise funds to meet their goals.

The actions of the Pineapple Fund have inspired others to do the same: According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, for example, Watsi, an international health group, received $2 million from the Pineapple Fund and subsequently received more crypto donations totaling $500,000, most likely from people inspired by the Pineapple Fund.

MAPS received a donation of $1 million. In a press release they thanked the Pineapple Fund and mentioned that they still had a “small amount to raise” to complete a series of research studies:

“As a non-profit with no government funding for psychedelic research, MAPS relies on contributions from individuals, businesses, and foundations to make psychedelic therapy a legal treatment. MAPS estimates that Phase 3 clinical trials will cost $26 million. With $17.3 million already raised or pledged, MAPS still needs $8.7 million to make MDMA-assisted psychotherapy legally available to millions of people suffering from PTSD.”

Following this, an anonymous donor —not the Pineapple Fund— gave $1 million in Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) for the organization.

The last donation from the Pineapple Fund was 47 BTC to The Internet Archive, leaving the fund with a final amount of 0.006 BTC of the 5194.3BTC available at the start of the project

The owner of the wallet decided to remain anonymous. Little is known about this generous person beyond the fact that they are a very early adopter of Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) who made their fortune through mining when Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) was not yet known worldwide. In his post they talk about the excitement when Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) reached $10, making it possible to conclude that they had owned Bitcoin (available on Coinbase) since at least 2011.

Pine’s goodbye words were as inspiring as their actions:

“If you’re ever blessed with crypto fortune, consider supporting what you aspire our world to be. 🙂

♥, Pine”

Mission Accomplished! Thank you, Pine!
